New nanoplanctonic cyanobacteria that can fix nitrogen

New nanoplanctonic cyanobacteria modify the knowledge about nitrogen and carbon fixation.

Scientists have discovered a new group of  nanoplanctonic cyanobacteria  bacteria, that can absorb also the atmosphjeric N2. With Trichodesmium, they represent two big families of Nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria.

These bacteria could modify the oceanic food chain. During the canicular period in the summer of 2006  in Marseilles, a strong proliferation of these cyanobacteria could be observed. Then, the scientists noticed that they were very reactive to the climate and the pollution. But these bacteria wouldn't be able to absorb the CO2 they would need. They do not have the rubisco enzyme fundamental for the fixation of carbon dioxide.
